IN BETWEEN SEASONS

Dressing in between season remains a burning issue. It's neither hot nor cold, and in the Western Cape, the weather could easily change from spring to summer in one day! The ultimate item to sport when posed with this, is to have a light trench coat perhaps from Trenery or Country Road, or if you wish to splurge, the all time classic from Burberry. My favourite in between seasons item is a light blazer that can be layered and stripped away when the temperature rises. Not  having much rain at this time of the year, one need not pay to much attention to shoes as utility would not be the criteria. With a slight shoe fetish, I still find it hard to imagine having to decide on a pair of shoes having regard to weather!  Wellingtons might be fashionable, but  to a girl of certain age, they are hardly flattering! The concept of mixing different prints is still an exciting trend, and gives your look an edge! Experiment with the idea until you find something that works, some do, some don't!

THE RIGHT TO VOTE

The right to vote can be compared to the right of freedom of movement, which brings me to today's trend. This is nothing new, but just a subtle reminder of just how popular this phenomenon has become over the years.   When I was younger ( much younger!) leopard print was sort of associated with nocturnal girls wearing fishnet stockings stalking dark alleys preying on vulnerable men for their sustenance. The animal print evolved and is now found on anything capable of print. The big cats have made such a profound impact on fashion that we should elevate them to regal status. They roam the wild with the freedom of the world, and they hunt with the stealth of a blade runner. Their coats are a magnificent piece of art and worthy of reproduction! 

I had great fun when I joined forces with a friend in a photographic stunt using light experiment, making us look all glitz and glam with more lights shone on us than celebrities..... these lights are not very forgiving, leading me to think that I should develop my Photoshop skills instead of my styling ability!

MONOCHORME IN PRINT

Black and White ensembles need no explanation, nor justification. It simply works for everybody, notwithstanding your height or size. One should just be mindful of the size of motifs, as print could easily confuse the eye to make one look bigger... My favourite trend is blending print on print. Wearing stripes with any other print in the same colour scheme just takes the outfit to another level. If in doubt, experiment with different tops and bottoms until you get the desired effect. Have fun, play with your clothes. As for two tone shoes, well there's nothing I can say to enhance the effect, they just work magic. I had a minor adjustment made to the skirt which was not designed with a mature women in mind, so with a little improvisation, it was made longer.

INDIAN SUMMER

When in Rome, you do as the Romans do, and when in Rajasthan, India, you  succumb to the bright colours and share in the joy of wearing bright costume and attire. I grew a progressive fondness for the bright and vibrant colours as we proceeded further North into the province, and by the time I reached Udaipur, I sported full regalia in the brightest green and blue imaginable. Our port of entry was New Delhi, where we approached Agra to visit the famous Taj Mahal. I was determined to wear traditional garb for the occassion to the magnificent monument. I scaled the street stalls, markets and bazaars of New Delhi, and  found this lovely dress at Westside, a department store in India, where one can shop for every colour and style that you can imagine from traditional Saree's to tunics and dresses, all worn with pants or leggings. It represents a typical Rajasthan style, with a slightly fitted top  and  flair bottom embellished around the seam, and worn with pants tapered down to the ankle. I should have added a scarf that ought to be twisted around the neck, falling down the side, but the tropical heat, even in winter, deterred me from adding any more cloth than already engulfed in.

IT'S IN THE JEANS

My fixation with jeans go back a long way, when a pair of Ronald Sassoon's  were the "it" jeans. The 80's dictated tight fitting jeans tapered down to the ankle, and needed a fair amount of energy to be applied to get in and out of them. I suppose the skinny trend merely represents a revival of the "hold your breath" era in a slightly different shape. However, pear shapes must steer clear of skinnies as it makes you look like a butternut pumpkin. I opt for the skinny bootleg, which fits tight around the thighs but is cut straight down to the bottom instead of those cut on  a curve around the hips.  I might still have to hold my breath getting into them but perhaps that's due to my recent submission to Lindt chocolate.

 

Come on girls, show us how to squeeze into them jeans, without suffocating or sustaining a hernia...
